Why does my clinic show as closed on Google Maps?

If patients search for your clinic and see "Permanently closed" or "Temporarily closed", many will go straight to the next name. This page explains what those labels mean and how to correct them if they are wrong.

What the labels mean

Google shows two closure statuses on Search and Maps: "Temporarily closed" and "Permanently closed". A permanently closed profile can still appear when people search for it, with the closure clearly shown.

Closed is not the same as "closed right now". A clinic that is shut for lunch or on a Sunday is simply outside its opening hours. Closure status is about whether the place is still open for business at all.

Why it can be wrong

Google's help pages do not list every cause, so we will not guess at one. What they do say is that people signed in to Google can suggest that a place is closed, and that this feedback helps Google decide whether to change the status. Someone may also have marked it by mistake, or an old listing for a previous address or practice may be the one you are looking at.

How to fix it if you manage the profile

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile and find the profile on Google Search or Maps.
  2. Choose Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. Under opening hours, next to Hours, choose Edit.
  4. Choose Open with main hours, tick the days you are open, set your hours with the drop-downs and Save.

Google has a separate "Mark your business as reopened" page for this. One exception: if the profile was marked permanently closed because of a location or name change, do not reopen it. Add a new business instead and verify it.

If you have a planned break

  • Closed for seven days or less: use special hours.
  • Closed for more than seven days, for the off-season or indefinitely: mark it "Temporarily closed".

Google notes that temporarily closed businesses can rank after open ones for broad searches, and that the effect depends on the category, the type of search and how many matching businesses are temporarily closed. So mark it back to open as soon as you reopen.

If you do not manage the profile yet

You will need to claim and verify it first. If you are signed in to Google and know the place, you can use "Suggest an edit" on Maps, but a suggestion is feedback, not a fix, and Google decides what to change. Managing the profile gives you direct control.

If it is still wrong

Check you are editing the right listing. Two listings for the same clinic (an old one and a current one) is a separate problem.
